Like many med students, I thought anything that didn’t directly help my grades or clinical skills wasn’t worth my time. But the relentless stress took its toll and I realised I needed something to help manage the mental and emotional strain of med school.
One evening, after a particularly stressful day, I decided to try Sat Kriya to see if it could help. At first, chanting and holding postures felt strange. But as I got used to the practice, I started to notice a difference. For the first time in a long while, my mind felt calm and clear. It grounds me, giving me a sense of steadiness and calm that I didn’t think was possible in the middle of such chaos.
What I appreciate most about Sat Kriya is how easy it is to fit into my life. It doesn’t require a lot of time or fancy equipment. In fact, I’ve practised it just about anywhere—sitting on the floor of my dorm room surrounded by textbooks, in a quiet corner of the library when I needed a break, and even during a few precious minutes in the clinic break room. No matter where I am, it only takes 30 minutes to feel the effects. It’s incredible how quickly the tension in my shoulders eases, my breath slows, and my mind feels clearer.
Through this practice, I’ve learned an important lesson: self-care isn’t selfish—it’s necessary. As med students, we’re so focused on our studies, exams, and responsibilities that we often forget to take care of ourselves. I used to think taking a break would set me back, but I’ve realised that even a short pause to breathe, chant, and reconnect can make a huge difference. It gives me the energy and clarity I need to keep going.
