PERSONAL EXPERIENCE:

As a fourth-year medical student, my routine often feels like a relentless loop of lectures, studying, and clinical rotations. I often found myself seated for long stretches, whether in class or bent over my notes in the library. This prolonged pressure resulted in poor circulation and tension in my back and neck. It was during this time that I stumbled upon the Sun Salutation (Surya Namaskar) kriya within the kundalini yoga club .

Initially, I approached it as  just another warm-up routine, but I quickly realized how transformative it could be. Each flowing sequence of poses felt like a gentle awakening for my body. With each round, I could feel my heart rate increase and blood circulate more freely. After just a few sessions, I noticed a significant reduction in the stiffness I had been feeling from long hours of sitting. The gentle stretches and movements massaged my inner organs, promoting better digestion—something I desperately needed during exam weeks when my stress levels peaked.

Practicing Sun Salutation kriya also helped me build strength. I began to engage my core, arms, and legs in ways I hadn’t realized I was neglecting. This newfound strength improved my posture, which was crucial for those long hours spent at my desk or in lectures. I became more aware of how I carried myself, and the tension in my back began to ease.

The best part? The boost in energy I felt after my practice. Each session left me invigorated, ready to tackle the next challenge—be it a lengthy lecture or a complicated case study. The dynamic flow not only recharged my body but also cleared my mind, making it easier to focus on the material I was studying. As a medical student, stress is almost a constant companion, but with Sun Salutation kriya, I learned to alleviate some of that anxiety through mindful practice. Participating in online yoga sessions focused on Kundalini yoga also enriched my experience. The sense of community within the Kundalini Yoga Club has been invaluable.

I began encouraging my fellow students to try Sun Salutation kriya, emphasizing how it complemented the principles of Kundalini yoga. They quickly noticed the benefits, from increased energy to improved focus during our studies. Together, we embraced the challenge of incorporating these kriya into our schedules, through online yoga  classes .

Incorporating Sun Salutation kriya into my daily routine has been a game changer. It has become my sanctuary - a practice that not only enhances flexibility and builds strength but also supports my overall well-being as I navigate the demanding world of medicine.
